Raan and Shea Parton of Apolis

“Everyone has heard the proverb, ‘teach someone to fish rather than give a person fish,’” Shea and Raan Parton of Apolis told us. “But what we have learned over the years of traveling is that there are plenty of well-trained fisherman, but often they don’t have the right bait or a large enough pond.”

Bicoastal Life with Eva Chen

Living a bicoastal life, Eva Chen doesn’t even try to compare Los Angeles to New York—they’re fundamentally too different. In New York, everyone says they’re a New Yorker, while in Los Angeles they associate with their specific neighborhood. “It’s ten cities in one,” she explained of the expansive area, “people identify by the tribe that they live in.” Upon moving to Venice, she experienced culture shock (learning to really drive was just one obstacle). She’s slowly settling in, exploring the city bit by bit like an anthropologist, while working as a freelance editor and consultant.

Morning Pastries with Proof Bakery

If you arrive at Proof Bakery after 11am craving a croissant, you should hope that luck is on your side. It’s the morning pastry they’re best known for, and as soon as they sell out for the day, you’ve missed your chance. You can’t go wrong with any other item on the menu, but there’s something remarkable about eating a small crescent-shaped treat that was part of a multi-day process to make.

Kate Miss of For Me, For You

Kate Miss is a longtime Warby Parker wearer, and we don’t say that lightly. Back in February of 2010 she posted about our launch, and ordered a pair of Fillmore frames soon afterwards. Needless to say, we’ve been following her work at For Me, For You for quite some time!  We spent an afternoon at her apartment in LA to meet the lady behind the blog (and much, much more).

Nathanael of Woodsmithe

Nathanael Balon’s work as Woodsmithe speaks for itself. He creates beautiful objects ranging from shelving to tables, displays and small items. Each piece tells a story and creates an experience for people that interact with them. While we do love his work, we love his story even more. He’s taken a winding road to reach this point in his career, but it seems to be one that was worth taking.

Confetti Cannons with ban.do

We think it's safe to assume that each day in the ban.do offices is full of fun. Even if there isn't a confetti cannon going off (which we experienced twice in one visit), there are bright colors and glittering objects everywhere you look. The latest additions to their decor are a few piñatas—they're huge, fringed and heart-shaped.

The ladies in this amazingly cheerful space are responsible for creating equally bright and sunny objects—girly accessories such as hair clips, headbands, corsages. Really, anything you can wear that adds a bit of spark! (more...)

Woven Designs by Brook&Lyn

"We've been saying we've lived in LA for seven months for the last three months," Mimi Jung of Brook&Lyn told us. "It's nice here nearly every day. In New York you can feel a bit trapped with buildings."

It's this warm, open-air feeling that has influenced some of her latest work—intricately woven, natural colored tapestries. (more...)

Talmadge of Pharmacie

There’s an air of mystery surrounding Pharmacie. It seems sort of like a “catch it if you can” concept. Luckily, we managed to track down founder Talmadge Lowe to get a sneak peek at his underground speakeasy that has evolved into a craft cocktail catering service.
